Latino Community Foundation Statement on U.S. Senate Appointment
Today, the Latino Community Foundation congratulates California Secretary of State Alex Padilla for his historic appointment to the United States Senate.
This appointment marks the first time in its 170-year history that California will have a Latino senator representing the state in one of the country’s most important deliberative bodies. California Latino representation in the U.S. Senate has been long overdue. We are thankful to Governor Gavin Newsom for acknowledging the significance of this moment and making this historic appointment at such a pivotal moment in our state and nation’s history.
The Latino Community Foundation looks forward to working with Senator Alex Padilla to advance policies that prioritize communities hardest hit by the current pandemic and its economic fallout. From strategic and timely response to COVID-19 testing and vaccination for Black and Brown communities, investments for small businesses, bold action on climate, and immediate action for immigration reform.
“Representation matters. Our nation needs representatives that will lead with moral clarity and conviction. Leaders grounded in values of social justice and who understand the strengths and complexities of our communities,” said Latino Community Foundation CEO Jacqueline Martinez Garcel. “As the incoming Biden Administration and United States Senate prepare to undertake new legislation to address COVID-19, the economy, immigration and climate change, we are confident Senator Padilla will advance the ideals of California and deliver positive change for all Californians.”
