Today’s announcement by the White House to eliminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program is an affront to the foundational values of our nation. This heartless and cruel decision is neither just nor merciful. It is a betrayal to the people who placed their trust in Government to protect and defend our values.
But this is far from over. Our voices will be heard. We will stand united.
We call upon our Congressional leaders to stop white nationalism, the criminalization of immigrants, and an attempt to rewrite the history of this Country — one that was founded on a set of beliefs that all people are created equal. It is a principle that has been tested and tried again and again. But the American people have fought to live up to this ideal and keep this land as a refuge for those that dream of freedom and opportunity.
Now it’s time to take up the battle again and maintain the moral fabric of our Democracy.
We call upon our leaders in Congress to act swiftly and pass a legislative solution to protect these ideals. We are asking Congress to protect DACA and offer a path to citizenship for our youth.
At the Latino Community Foundation, we will do our part to press leaders in both the Senate and House of Representatives to pass a legislative solution. There are options on the table, whether through the DREAM Act, Bridge Act or the American Hope Act. We are counting on our leaders on both sides of the aisle to act on behalf of the interest of All Americans.
Today, we stand with the brave young people and their parents who have sacrificed everything to offer their children hope and a future. This battle is not over. We must let our voices be heard. Let us be relentless in defending the ideals of our Nation. This is the time to stand united.
