BEAUTIFUL BROWN CHILD
By: Jose Gonzalez @JoseBilingue
Beautiful brown child
They won’t let you stay
Stripping away your parents
Putting you in a cage
A CAGE
Putting you in a cage
The deterrent necessary
As a signal that you should stay away
So they say
Putting you in a cage
Because what are we to do
It’s your fault for coming here
Trying to get through
So they say
And we can feel and see
This hope they peddle
As the land of the free
Was not meant for you and me
The light of Lady Liberty
Was not lit for this shade of brown
Who must we be then
To be truly endowed
With the so call natural rights they like to throw around
As a supposedly moral superiority, a hypocritical high ground
I’m sorry beautiful brown child
That we let you down
As there you sit
In a cage
A CAGE
Wondering, as we are, if it was supposed to work this way
It’s easy to feel and give in to rage
Because the fact is you’re put in a cage
A CAGE
And to try to lead
With love as a force
When this is the course
We’re supposedly better than, or so we’ve decreed
But the thing is
They’ve taken kids away before
And broken families
In peace and in war
In the name of progress or enforcing the law
How will this time be different
If we still refuse to see
That this is also what America chooses to be
There you are still
In tears in a cage
A CAGE
Because there are cowards with fears who simply cannot face
What you represent
But I will do my best to not let you down
My beautiful powerful little brown child
YOU MATTER – I refuse to forget
Because otherwise we let
This $%&#@ happen again
