This week, the Latino Community Foundation is commemorating the 5-year anniversary of the devasting 2017 wildfires in Northern California by honoring the power of grassroots leadership. Community leaders, organizers, healers, and artists will come together to honor the land, celebrate collective wins, and utilize the power of arts and culture to re-imagine our collective future.
LCF’s Just Recovery Partnership was born out of its Wildfire Relief Fund that began in 2017. In five years, LCF has invested more than $4M in 25+ Latino nonprofits, supported the establishment of the nation’s first ever UndocuFund, and prioritized civic and economic power for Latino immigrant families and farmworker communities.
To date, LCF’s model of investing in grassroots organizing to leverage a Just Recovery has transformed the region and all of us who have been involved. Latino leaders have developed deep trust and respect for one another and have joined forces to secure major wins.
Together, we have increased voter turnout by 12%, census participation by 2%, and Latino representation in government-led efforts in recovery. From helping to secure Just Cause Eviction ordinances to advocating for farmworker hazard pay and ensuring language access, Latino nonprofits moved over $45M in financial assistance for essential workers and their families.
Over the last five years, LCF’s Just Recovery Partnership has been through three major wildfires, flooding, power outages, and a global pandemic. Our unique model kept our grassroots leaders and their organizations strong, connected, and nimble. Today, LCF is helping to establish the California UndocuFund Network, positioning Promotoras as vital social entrepreneurs, and joining forces to prioritize climate justice.
At the event, we will unveil our “Revolutionizing Disaster Philanthropy” report that shares powerful stories and celebrates our collective wins. We urge philanthropic leaders to prioritize Latino nonprofit infrastructure and to fund at the intersections of racial, economic, and climate justice. Help us advance a model built on love, trust, and shared community power. The world needs it.
A very special thank you to all our individual donors and philanthropic partners who believed in our vision and are helping to advance change, not charity. Let’s keep funding community organizing, healing, and power building. Together, we will change the world.
