Kinship.
It is what Father Gregory Boyle of Homeboy Industries has long taught us. This idea that we are all related and connected. It is what makes us human.
The last two weeks have been heart wrenching. An aching pain beyond words has kept us up at night. The anguish cries of children reminded a nation that this is a fight to save the soul of our country.
Because you spoke up, because you said that this too could be your child, because you donated, you forced the political system to backtrack and end family separations. Thank you.
But we are NOT done yet. We can rest when all children are reunited with their families. We can rest when families seeking asylum are free from jails. We can rest when we end the criminalization of immigrants, and instead welcome them with open arms as human beings who deserve the opportunity to be in this country. These are the core values our nation was founded on — a home country for the destitute and oppressed yearning to be free.
Tomorrow we take another step forward in claiming these truths. ALL men, women, and children are created equal – and endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, among them Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Our democracy yearns to be fully born. And, we must do our part to make that happen.
Join us Saturday, June 23th in San Francisco. We will lift our voices, strengthen our resolve, and build community unified by an ache for justice and a commitment to HOPE.
With enormous love and determination,
Jacqueline
