Our hearts ache with yours as we see and read stories of families being separated from their children.
The gut-wrenching news coverage and photos reflect the raw truth of what has been happening across our country. It is an affront on the values this country is founded on and the promises it made to be a refuge of hope to the less fortunate. Separating children from their families is the latest attack on our families. It is unconscionable and inhumane. There is never a right time to play politics with the lives of our children.
At the Latino Community Foundation, family is at the center of our work. When our own children and grandchildren ask us what did we do at such a time as this, how will we respond? Here are some things you can consider doing today:
RALLY FAMILIES BELONG TOGETHER – JUNE 23rd
Join us on Saturday June 23rd at the rally “Families Belong Together.” We are meeting at 10:00 am at the War Memorial Court by Civic Center, San Francisco. Find out more information here.
CALL YOUR LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES
Call your local representative and express your rage around this issue. Click here to find your member of Congress.
LEARN ABOUT POTENTIAL LEGISLATION THAT CAN HELP
Earlier this week, California Senator Dianne Feinstein introduced the Keep Families Together Act- a bill which would limit the separation of families at borders and other ports of entry. Both California Senators are co-sponsoring this bill so follow their leadership for next steps.
CONNECT WITH YOUR GIVING CIRCLE
If you are already a member of a Giving Circle, plan an emergency meeting to brainstorm ways to take action. Examples include: writing a Letter To the Editor of your local newspaper, hosting a Happy Hour fundraiser for a local immigrant rights group, or organizing a rally to keep this issue in the public consciousness!
SUPPORT AND FOLLOW ORGANIZATIONS ON THE GROUND
Philanthropic action is an important way to show our solidarity. Check out these three organizations – Al Otro Lado, Border Angels, Texas Civil Rights Project – that work on the border and offer hope to our families.
HELP ENERGIZE THE LATINO VOTE
Let’s never forget that elections have consequences, and that the people we elect must share our values. Today is another reminder that our work to get out the vote matters. We have the power to change the direction of this country. Help us mobilize the vote. Register to vote here!
We know these constant attacks on immigrants and Latino families can feel overwhelming. In times like these, our strength comes from community. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with your ideas on collective action. Refugee Day is next week – June 20th, an opportunity to take action!
With immense love,
Your LCF Family
